There are two types of cnc Nd: YAG laser cutting machines: the pulsed Nd: YAG laser cutting machine and the continuous wave operation Nd: YAG laser cutting machine (cw laser).
 

Cnc pulsed Nd: YAG laser cutting machine
Pulsed Nd: YAG lasers emit a beam at a very short plus length, typically measured in milliseconds. The laser within this pulse period has a several kilowatts of peak power – at times as much as 10 kilowatts.

A pulsed Nd: YAG lasers with an average power rating of approx. 150 watts operates exclusively according to the fusion cutting process. This type of laser is used for fine cutting and can produce kerfs < 50 µm. Material thickness in the tenths of millimeter range are preferred.

The cutting speed for pulsed lasers is more or less linearly dependent on the average power. The beam quality decreases as the power increases so that fine cutting at an average power of > 150 watts is only possible in certain circumstances. For example, a 300 watt laser can produce a kerf width of approx. 200 µm.
 

Cnc continuous (cw) operation Nd: YAG laser cutting machine
As the name implies, Nd: YAG lasers emit a continuous laser beam. They are also known in the their abbreviated from as cw-YAG lasers (cw = continuous wave).

The use of these lasers in sheet metal processing has only been possible in recent years. It was first necessary to find a way to input 800 watts of laser power into glass fibres only 0.3mm in diameter.

Only afterwards did it become possible to deliver the beam through a flexible cable to any point in the working area without loss of beam quality. Test cuts with a Nd: YAG laser in cw operation have shown that a laser power of 800 watts – in the thin sheet range of up to 3mm – produces similar cutting results to a CO2 laser.

The machine concept of 2D flatbed machines can also be combined with the Nd: YAG laser. However, the same safety covers cannot be used as with CO2 lasers.
